Thursday, September 11, 2025 - Detectives of the Kebbi State Police Command have arrested six suspects in connection with the theft of gold ornaments valued at over N109.5 million in Ka’oje town, Bagudo Local Government Area of the state.
The spokesperson of the command, Nafiu Abubakar, who made
this known in a statement on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, said the arrests
followed a complaint lodged at the State Criminal Investigation Department,
Birnin Kebbi.
The case has generated wide public interest in Kebbi and
beyond, not only because of the staggering value of the stolen gold but also
due to the involvement of a serving officer of the Nigerian Correctional
Service in the crime.
According to the PPRO, two golden bangles, one Haoujeu motorcycle, iPhone
16, Samsung Galaxy Ultra and Samsung Flip, have so far been recovered from the
suspects.
“On the 4th September, 2025, a complaint of theft received
at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Birnin Kebbi, revealed
that sometime between 2024 and 2025, unknown person(s) dishonestly trespassed
into the residence of Hajiya Rabi f of Ka'oje town, Bagudo LGA of Kebbi State,
and stole Five (5) gold necklaces, Nine (9) gold bangles and Four (4) gold
rings of about 782.7 comulative weight, valued at One Hundred and Nine Million,
Five Hundred and Seventy Eight Thousand Naira (#109, 578, 000:00), belonging to
her daughter one Hajiya Amina Hassan Bello and her siblings,” the statement
read.
"On receipt of the complaint, a team of detectives
immediately swung into action and succeeded in arresting one Ibrahim Abubakar
Ka'oje , an officer, attached to the Nigerian Correctional Service.
"In the course of interrogation, the suspect confessed
to the crime. He added further that the stolen items have subsequently been
sold to one Sa'adu Ibrahim Darhami, Hamza Ahmad all m of Sokoto state, Nasiru
Sani m of Birnin Kebbi, and Tasi'u Umar m of Zauro town, Birnin Kebbi LGA of
Kebbi State.
"Credible investigation further revealed that the
suspect was assisted by one Ibrahim Usman Oroji in disposing some of the stolen
items and received the sum of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira
(#2,500,000:00) of the proceeds for himself.
"Similarly, one Mustapha Hassan and others still at
large, helped the suspect in concealing the remaining proceeds of the crime by
facilitating the purchase of two plots of land in Birnin Kebbi metropolis.
“While Investigation into the case is ongoing, the following
exhibits namely: Two golden bangles, one Haoujeu motorcycle, iPhone 16, Samsung
Galaxy Ultra and Samsung Flip, have so far been recovered from the suspects.”
