Cooking gas prices increase by 44.5% in 12 months – NBS




Wednesday, September 3, 2025 - The average retail price of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly called cooking gas, rose by 44.51% year-on-year in July 2025, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In its July 2025 LPG Price Watch report, released Tuesday, the NBS revealed that the cost increased from ₦14,261.57 in July 2024 to ₦20,609.48 in July 2025, adding more pressure on household energy budgets.

Month-on-month, however, the average price dipped slightly by 1.91%—falling from ₦21,010.56 in June 2025 to ₦20,609.48 in July. Experts, however, warn this may not indicate a sustained drop.

For the 5kg cylinder, the report showed a month-on-month decline of 0.96%, from ₦8,323.95 in June 2025 to ₦8,243.79 in July. Year-on-year, prices jumped by 37.98% from ₦5,974.55 in July 2024.

State Highlights:

Lowest (12.5kg): Yobe (₦19,030.00), Niger (₦19,154.99), Nasarawa (₦20,000.62)

Highest (5kg): Adamawa (₦9,011.36), Rivers (₦9,005.00), Taraba (₦8,945.43)

Lowest (5kg): Yobe (₦7,612.00), Niger (₦7,662.00), Nasarawa (₦8,000.25)

Zonal Breakdown:

12.5kg: South-South (₦21,278.14) highest; South-West (₦20,184.79) lowest

5kg: South-South (₦8,511.26) highest; South-West (₦8,073.92) lowest

The NBS said the findings were based on data from over 10,000 respondents across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.
