Wednesday, September 24, 2025 - The Bauchi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a housewife, Rabi Nuhu, for allegedly burning the thighs of her five-year-old stepdaughter over bedwetting in Magama Gumau, Toro Local Government Area of the state.
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, the Police Public
Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, said the case was reported on September 13,
2025.
According to him, “The victim sustained burns on her lower
abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. The Commissioner of Police, Sani Omolori Aliyu,
ordered the immediate arrest of the culprit and directed that the case be
transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department for discreet
investigation.”
Speaking on the development, a resident of the area and
human rights activist, Kabiru Mohammed, disclosed that the victim, who lost her
mother about a year ago, has been living with her father and stepmother.
He said, “The minor has been experiencing violence at the
hands of her stepmother.”
To avoid issues, her father bought her a separate mattress,
but the violence did not stop. The girl confided in her uncle, saying her
stepmother burnt her private part because she bedwets often. It was her uncle
who escalated the matter and reported it to the Police.
“We also gathered that the suspect often transfers her
marital issues with the victim’s father to the child.”
The victim’s father, Mohammad Umar, admitted that his wife
had frequently complained about the child’s bedwetting, which led him to
provide a separate mattress for her.
He, however, explained that when he first noticed burns on
his daughter, his wife claimed that hot tea had accidentally spilled on her, a
story he initially believed until the matter came to light.
