Sunday, September 7, 2025 - The Kano
State Police Command has arrested nine suspects in connection with a violent
mob attack on the Garko Police Division following the arrest of three men
linked to an alleged culpable homicide case.
According to a statement on Saturday by the Police Public
Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, the incident occurred on September 5,
2025, when officers from the Wudil Area Command brought three homicide suspects
to the Garko Police Division for interrogation.
However, an angry crowd armed with sticks and stones stormed
the Division, protesting the death of a victim in the case and attempting to
lynch the suspects.
“The mob action resulted in significant property damage,
including the burning of a divisional patrol vehicle, destruction of three
vehicles belonging to Hisbah and Garko Local Government Council, and the
breaking of windows of the Police Divisional building,” the statement read.
Three police officers sustained injuries during the attack
and were rushed to Wudil Hospital, where they are responding to treatment.
Tragedy struck when a burning tyre burst and struck one of
the attackers, leading to his death, while three others were injured.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, swiftly
deployed containment operations and engaged local stakeholders to restore calm
and order in the community
While confirming the arrest of nine suspects, Kiyawa said
investigations were ongoing to track down other perpetrators.
The statement quoted CP Bakori as cautioning the public
against jungle justice.
“Taking the law into your hands undermines the rule of law
and disrupts public peace. Citizens are advised to always channel grievances or
concerns to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to violence,” he
said.
The Commissioner assured residents of Kano State of the
Command’s unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property, maintaining
peace, and ensuring justice in all cases.
Recall, the Kano State Police Command declared a decisive
war on thuggery, locally known as Yan-Daba, following a surge in
gang-related violence across the metropolis.
Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori issued strict
orders during a high-level security summit on June 14, 2025, mandating rapid
identification, raids, and neutralisation of thug hideouts.
Bakori emphasised a zero-tolerance policy, warning officers to act proactively to prevent escalation, and reassured residents that the police are committed to restoring peace, vowing that people should be able to “sleep with their two eyes closed.”
