Traders count losses as fire destroys building in Port Harcourt



Saturday, August 16, 2025 - A fire outbreak on Friday morning has destroyed goods and property worth millions of Naira at 57, Azikiwe Street, in the Mile 2 axis of Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3am when residents were fast asleep but its cause could not be ascertained.

The fire razed down many rooms and shops within the large compound even as a team of fire fighters from the state fire service battled to extinguish it, to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the compound.

One of the victims, Wisdom Jack, who sells Ice block machines, said he lost materials and goods running into several millions.

He said: “Both the ice block machines, even the ones companies gave me to mold have been destroyed. I don’t have anybody to run to.”

Another shop owner who simply identified himself as Chigozie said he was called, on Friday, while he was still asleep that his shop was on fire, but he couldn’t save his goods when he arrived the scene.

He said: “I have two button hole machines, two weaving machines and three industrial machines and cash of over N1million that I kept in my shop too, I lost them all. But I know my God will make a way for me.”

Operatives from the Azikiwe Police Division, in Diobu, Port Harcourt, were seen trying to prevent miscreants from looting the salvaged property at press time
