Tuesday, August 19, 2025 - The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit, popularly known as the Lagos Task Force, has impounded 668 motorcycles during a week-long enforcement exercise across the state.
The operation, led by the agency’s Chairman, Chief
Superintendent of Police (CSP) Adetayo Akerele, covered several flashpoints,
including Ishaga, Balogun Bus Stop on Iju-Ishaga Road, Ijegun Roundabout,
Iyana-Iba, Iyana-Ishasi, Igbo-Elerin, Iyana-School, Volkswagen Bus Stop on the
Lagos-Badagry Expressway, and Kola Bus Stop on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
According to the agency’s Director of Public Affairs,
Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, the targeted areas were flagged following numerous
complaints and distress calls over the persistent use of motorcycles, popularly
known as Okada, by hoodlums and suspected criminals to attack commuters,
tricycle operators and their passengers, particularly at night.
During the enforcement, there was resistance at Kola Bus
Stop, where hoodlums, assisted by Okada riders, attempted to disrupt the
operation. They were dispersed by task force operatives, with no injuries
recorded.
Seven suspects were arrested, while law and order were
restored in all the affected locations. CSP Akerele warned Okada riders against
plying highways and restricted routes, stressing that the agency was committed
to enforcing traffic regulations, safeguarding lives, and curbing criminal
activities linked to motorcycle operations.
He added that all motorcycles seized would be forfeited to
the state government through the courts and subsequently crushed in line with
the law.
“The Lagos State Task Force remains dedicated to ensuring
safer highways and a more secure Lagos for all,” he said.
