Tuesday, August 26, 2025 - Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) has condemned the plan by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review the salaries and remuneration of political office holders in Nigeria.
The human rights lawyer described the move by
the commission as highly insensitive considering the current challenges and
hardship faced by Nigerians across the nation.
Speaking during an interview on Channels
Television’s Sunrise Daily, the senior lawyer said the salary review process by
RMAFC is a misplacement of priorities.
He slammed the commission for having the nerve
to plan for a salary review for political office holders while ignoring the
struggles faced by millions of citizens.
Falana said, “The RMAFC seems to have
overlooked the harsh living conditions in the country and the daily hardships
endured by ordinary people.”
Further citing the report from the National
Bureau of Statistics (NBS) over the multidimensional poverty bedevilling 133
million Nigerians, Falana queried the rationale behind any form of salary
increment for public officials.
“At this point, proposing higher wages for
political office holders is not only tone-deaf but also unfair to the majority
battling severe economic pressure,” Falana said.
