Friday, August 8, 2025 - Former Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, Dr. Joe Abah, has criticised the recent extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
The statement comes after President Bola Tinubu approved a
one-year extension for Adeniyi, whose tenure was expected to end this year.
Adeniyi was appointed Comptroller-General in June 2023.
The extension approved by the President now allows him to
remain in office until 2025.
Reacting in a post on X on Friday, Abah questioned the
rationale behind the decision, describing it as a culture that lacks logic and
serves no national interest.
“This culture of extending tenures that have ordinarily
expired still doesn’t make any sense to me. What is the logic and purpose of
it?” he wrote.
“The person concerned is given an additional year, in my own
opinion, just for their own personal benefit. To my mind, there was never any
discernible benefit to the country from any of the extensions granted.”
