Monday, August 25, 2025 - US president, Donald Trump has threatened to send the country’s National Guard troops to Baltimore, escalating his confrontation with Democratic leaders as he pursues a high-profile crackdown on crime and immigration.
In a post on Truth Social, the Republican president
described Baltimore as an “out of control, crime-ridden” city and said he would
deploy troops if Maryland Governor Wes Moore “needs help, like Gavin Newscum
did in L.A.,” using a derogatory nickname for California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Trump claimed federal intervention would “quickly clean up the Crime,” citing
the recent deployment of troops to Washington, D.C.
The comments sparked a sharp response from Moore, who
accused Trump of reviving “1980s scare tactics” and invited the president to
walk with him through Baltimore to see the city’s progress. “Hey Donald, we can
get you a golf cart if that makes things easier,” Moore quipped on X, noting
that Baltimore’s homicide rate has fallen more than 20 percent since he took
office. He added, “The last time the homicide rate was this low in Baltimore
City, I was not born yet.”
Trump countered that he would “much prefer that he clean up
this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk,’” attacking Moore’s record
and threatening to withhold federal funding linked to a collapsed bridge.
The exchange highlights a broader national clash between
Trump and Democratic governors over the president’s use of military force in
American cities. Earlier this month, Trump sent nearly 5,000 troops to Los
Angeles in response to immigration enforcement protests, a move fiercely
opposed by Newsom. He also ordered National Guard deployments to Washington,
where troops began carrying weapons on Sunday after initially keeping them in
the armory.
US media reports suggest Chicago could be next, with Trump
telling reporters Friday, August 22, “We’re going to make our cities
very, very safe. I think Chicago will be our next and then we’ll help with New
York.”
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon
Johnson rejected the idea, with Pritzker posting on X: “Donald Trump and MAGA
Republicans are trying to paint their party as one of ‘law and order.’ That
couldn’t be further from the truth.”
Chicago police recorded 573 homicides in 2024, down 8
percent from the previous year. The Pentagon has declined to confirm whether
Chicago will see troop deployments, while Trump continues to signal that more
Democratic-led cities could soon face federal military intervention.
