Wednesday, July 30, 2025 - Social commentator Morris Monye has stirred reactions online after calling the $100,000 reward promised to each Super Falcons player “a bit excessive” given Nigeria’s current economic realities.
Monye shared his thoughts via X, writing
“With the widespread poverty and excessive borrowing, we are
doing, the $100,000 reward money for each Super Falcons is a bit excessive.”
He clarified that while the intention behind the reward is
commendable, the country’s priorities need to be re-examined
“The idea behind the reward money is fantastic but we can’t
be borrowing money every time while the average man in Nigeria is dying in
hunger and we are splashing money for a select few.”
Quoting late revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara, he added:
“It’s better for everyone to drink clean water than a select
few to drink Champagne.”
The comment has since sparked a wave of mixed reactions online. While some Nigerians agree with his stance on prioritising basic needs and infrastructure, others argue that the Super Falcons deserve every dollar for representing the country and excelling against the odds.
