Sunday, July 6, 2025 - Lagos State Government has sealed Global International College, a private educational institution located in Lekki, over environmental infractions deemed hazardous to public health.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of the
Environment and Water Resources, the enforcement action followed the discovery
of untreated faecal sludge and wastewater being discharged from the school
premises into surrounding areas, creating a pervasive stench and discomfort for
nearby residents.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo
Wahab, disclosed that the unsanitary discharge was channelled through a pumping
system directly into the drainage network, in clear violation of established
environmental regulations.
He noted that the enforcement was carried out on Saturday
after multiple warnings to the school management were ignored. Wahab emphasized
that the government would not hesitate to impose strict penalties on
institutions or individuals who violate environmental laws.
He also warned that the state would not tolerate any form of
environmental abuse, stressing that erring facilities would face sanctions,
including prosecution, where necessary.
“All environmental nuisance and pollution portends grave
dangers to public health and will be met with appropriate sanctions and/or
prosecution,” Wahab said.
