Sunday, July 13, 2025 - The Lagos State Government has commissioned 10 new ambulance points across the state as part of efforts to strengthen emergency medical services.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi
Ogunyemi, announced the development during a commissioning ceremony held
Saturday at the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) Point in Agege.
The newly established points are located in Agege, Agbowa,
Masha (Surulere), Badagry, Mile 2, Epe, Shomolu, Igando, Iba, and Ibeju-Lekki.
Dr. Ogunyemi said the initiative aligns with Governor
Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES Plus Agenda and is aimed at reducing emergency
response times, particularly in underserved areas.
“These new ambulance points are more than buildings—they are
symbols of hope and progress in saving lives,” she noted.
The event was attended by top officials including the
Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, and the
contractor, Mr. Sulaiman Hammed of Hamibra Integrated Nigeria Ltd.
Dr. Ogunyemi commended Mr. Hammed for exceeding expectations
in delivering quality infrastructure and recognized Mr. Moshood Akintayo, a
former LASAMBUS patient, who voluntarily beautified the Agege ambulance point
in gratitude for life-saving care he received.
Dr. Ogboye described the project as “a major leap forward”
in enhancing Lagos State’s emergency healthcare system.
“This is not just about cutting ribbons. It’s about building
a system that works for the people,” he said.
He added that the new ambulance points are part of a larger
plan to build more centres in hospitals, busy roads, and local government
areas, with trauma centres already functioning in Epe and Tollgate.
“We’re building systems, from ambulances and personnel bases
to communication upgrades and trauma centres,” Ogboye said.
He also thanked the LASAMBUS team for their continued
dedication, saying, “We know the work will increase, but your efforts are
saving lives every day.”
According to him, the ambulance stations are fitted with
high-quality steel, anti-burglar panels, hybrid plasma cooling systems, and
modern hangars that can hold up ambulances safely.
“These structures are cost-effective and can be relocated if
needed. We’re proud to contribute to a healthier Lagos,” he said.
Deputy Director of Nursing and a representative of LASAMBUS,
Mrs. Rasheedat Saka called the new ambulance points a “game-changer.”
She praised the government for listening to the needs of
ambulance workers and for providing continuous training.
“With these new points, we are now more ready and
comfortable to respond to emergencies, ww rain or shine,” she said.
She reminded Lagosians that in emergencies, they should call
the toll-free numbers 767 or 112 for help.
One of the highlights of the event was a touching testimony
by Mr. Akintayo, who shared how LASAMBUS saved his life earlier this year.
“They came quickly, treated me on the spot, and took me to
the hospital, all for free. I’m alive today because of LASAMBUS,” he said. As a
show of appreciation, he painted the perimeter wall around the new Agege
ambulance point.
The unveiling brings the total number of new pre-fabricated
LASAMBUS Points in Lagos to 16, following the commissioning of six others last
year.
The state government says it is working towards setting up
at least one ambulance point in every local government area.
The government had earlier, in December 2022, renovated an
abandoned ambulance point on Bajulaiye Road in Shomolu after over five years of
neglect.
