Thursday, July 10, 2025 - A devastating fire incident, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, destroyed five shops and a form factory at two different locations in Oyo State.
The five shops were destroyed beside Olowo-Ifon Shopping
Complex, Orita Challenge, in Ibadan, the state capital, while the foam factory
incident occurred at Global Crystal foam Nigeria Limited located at the Oko-Oba
Area of Akinmorin Road in Oyo town.

The chairman of the state Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande,
confirmed both incidents in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday.
He explained that the cause of the fire could be traced to
an electric surge.
Akinwande said, “On Wednesday, July 9, at exactly 02:24hrs,
the incident was reported through a telephone call. The agency’s personnel, led
by CFS Adesina Olusoji, promptly mobilised to the scene of incident and on
arrival, we met shops engulfed by fire.
“We quickly swung into action and restricted the fire from
spreading to unaffected nearby shops and the nearby shopping complex. The fire
was completely extinguished, and fire safety advice was given to the public on
how to prevent fire incidents.
“The fire affected five out of 11 shops and the agency’s
personnel were able to save properties worth of millions of naira. The fire
incident was traced to an electric surge that ignited nearby combustibles and
set the shops ablaze.”

at exactly 22:39hr, on Tuesday.
“The agency’s officers, led by CFM Yisau Lateef, swiftly
deployed to the scene of the incident. On getting to the scene of the incident,
we met the warehouse of the foam mattress company engulfed by fire.
“The firemen quickly got to work by applying necessary
firefighting chemicals to curtail the fire. The fire was strictly restricted to
where we met it and prevented from spreading to other sections of the company.
The fire was extinguished completely.
“The fire was a result of spontaneous reactions due to the
accumulated mattresses. The fire slightly affected the foam warehouse and
properties worth millions of naira were saved by the agency.”
In a related development, the fire service also attended to
a fire incident at the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ building at
Aremo in Ibadan.
The chairman, who confirmed the incident, said, “The fire
incident was reported at exactly 05:44hrs by a running caller and Mr Muideen to
the house on fire at the above address.
“Immediately, the officers quickly left for the scene. On
getting there, we met two bedroom-flat at the upper floor of a storey
residential building engulfed by fire. We quickly engaged our appliance, and we
were able to curtail the fire from spreading to the ground floor of the
building.
“The upper floor was severely damaged and the ground floor
and all nearby buildings were saved by the officers of the fire service,” he
explained.
