Monday, June 30, 2025 - A dispute over beer ended in tragedy in Mhondoro Ngezi, Zimbabwe, on 27 June 2025, when a man was fatally stabbed near Nyika Secondary School Grounds.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the death
of Mugove Katsande and the arrest of 37-year-old Tinashe Chamunorwa in
connection with the incident.
According to police, the argument began after Chamunorwa
allegedly seized Katsande’s beer and poured it on the ground, sparking a
violent confrontation. In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, the ZRP
said, “The ZRP confirms the arrest of Tinashe Chamunorwa (37) in connection
with a case of murder which occurred on 27/06/25 near Nyika Secondary School
Grounds, Mhondoro Ngezi in which Mugove Katsande died.”
Police further stated, “The suspect allegedly stabbed the
victim with a Columbia knife on the chest following a misunderstanding which
rose after the suspect snatched the victim’s beer and poured it on the ground.”
The altercation reportedly took place in full view of
bystanders, some of whom were left stunned by the sudden escalation. A local
resident, who declined to be identified, said the two men had been drinking
together before the dispute turned violent.
Katsande collapsed immediately after the stabbing and was
pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
While Chamunorwa is in custody, authorities are now
searching for a second suspect. “Meanwhile, the ZRP is appealing for
information which may lead to the arrest of Vengai Chihiya who is being sought
in connection with this case,” police said.
They urged the public to assist with any relevant
information. “Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station,”
read the statement.
Although police did not confirm the value of the beer
involved, alcohol in Zimbabwe typically sells for around USD1.00 per bottle.
