Sunday, June 1, 2025 - Media outlets in Gaza report that Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar, a physician in Gaza, has died from wounds sustained in an Israeli airstrike last week that targeted his family home in Khan Younis.
The attack killed nine of al-Najjar’s ten children.
Al-Najjar’s wife, Dr. Alaa al-Najjar, had earlier been
photographed visiting her injured husband in the intensive care unit at Nasser
Hospital in Khan Younis.
She had survived the attack because she was at work when the
strike occurred.
Last week, a widely shared image showed Dr. Hamdi al-Najjar
standing beside his only surviving child.
At the time, he appeared physically unharmed. The cause of
his subsequent death has not been independently verified.
The Israeli military had previously commented on the
airstrike, stating:
“An aircraft targeted several suspects identified by IDF
forces operating in a structure near their position in the Khan Younis area.
“Khan Younis is a dangerous combat zone that was cleared of
civilians by the IDF for their protection prior to the start of operations.
Claims of harm to non-combatants are under review.”
