Nigerian charged with biting off police officer's ear in Malaysia

Thursday, May 1, 2025 - A 38-year-old Nigerian man pleaded not guilty at the magistrates' court to causing grievous harm to a police corporal, whose left ear was bitten off in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

Okenyehike Kelvin Obianke is accused of biting off the ear of Danielrul Azraq Ahmad Khair, 36, from the Sentul district police headquarters' mobile patrol vehicle unit, at 10.10am in front of a clinic in Metro Prima, Kepong, on April 25, 2025. 

He entered his plea after the charge was read to him before Magistrate S. Mageswary on Wednesday, April 30. 

Obianke, who was unrepresented, said the incident was unintentional.

"I am not guilty," the private college student said.

The charge under Section 325 of the Penal Code carries a maximum sentence of seven years' imprisonment and a fine.

The court denied bail and set June 10 for the appointment of a lawyer and submission of documents

Separately, at another magistrates' court, Obianke claimed trial to two charges: not possessing valid travel documents to enter Malaysia and consuming benzo (nimetazepam).

He entered his pleas before Magistrate Atiqah Mohamed@Mohamad Saim. 

He allegedly committed the offences at 10.10am in front of the same clinic on April 25 and at 3pm at the Narcotics Investigations Department headquarters on April 26

Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, punishable under Section 6(3), carries a maximum RM10,000 fine or imprisonment of up to five years, or both, and not less than six lashes upon conviction.

The drug offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a maximum prison term of two years upon conviction.

Mention was set for July 23.

On April 25, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the corporal lost part of his left ear after he was bitten by an aggressive foreigner while responding to a distress call at Metro Prima in Kepong.

 He said the foreigner was behaving unruly at a private clinic, prompting staff to call the police

On Tuesday, Sentul district police chief Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari said that the corporal's ear could not yet be reattached due to possible infection.

He said the attending doctor at Kuala Lumpur Hospital would reassess the corporal's condition today before deciding on the surgery to reattach the part of the ear.

The corporal had assisted in arresting Obianke and placing him in the police vehicle.
