Monday, May 19, 2025 - The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has received another group of 13 trafficked Nigerians repatriated from Ghana and Mali. The returnees, made up of 12 girls and a five-year-old boy, were welcomed by NiDCOM Chairman Abike Dabiri-Erewa, according to a statement released on Sunday by the agency’s Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun.
The victims disclosed that they were deceived with promises
of legitimate jobs and then forced into prostitution. The girls recounted
harrowing experiences of sexual abuse, physical assault, and emotional trauma
at the hands of their traffickers in both countries.
Dabiri-Erewa reassured the returnees that NiDCOM remains
committed to supporting their reintegration into society. She promised that the
Commission would provide necessary logistics to help reunite them with their
families and work with the governors of their respective states to ensure their
rehabilitation.
She also stressed the urgent need for a national crackdown
on human traffickers. She advocated for naming and shaming offenders after
legal prosecution to combat the growing threat of modern-day slavery.
