Thursday, May 29, 2025 -The Nigerian Army has confirmed the detention of a female soldier, Corporal Amina Maidoki, following allegations of theft and other forms of misconduct deemed inconsistent with military values.
In a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public
Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Army stated that Maidoki is
under investigation for behaviour considered contrary to the standards and
ethics of the Nigerian Army. The statement emphasised that her detention is
temporary and aligns with lawful procedures outlined in the Armed Forces Act
and other internal regulations.
“As a professional military institution, the Nigerian Army
is guided by extant provisions of the Armed Forces Act (Cap A20 LFN 2004),
internal regulations, and the highest standards of military ethics.
Consequently, her temporary detention is in accordance with the lawful
procedures stipulated for service personnel,” the statement read.
The Army stressed that disciplinary processes are not
arbitrary and that every service member is entitled to procedural fairness. It
assured that the ongoing investigation is being conducted with due respect for
Maidoki’s legal and human rights, and that she continues to receive appropriate
welfare support in line with military standards.
Dismissing reports of unlawful detention or denial of legal
representation, the Army described such claims as false and misleading,
intended to stir public sentiment. It urged the public to disregard
misinformation and avoid speculative commentary on the matter.
The military also addressed concerns raised by Maidoki’s
family, stating that it remained open to lawful communication and engagement,
provided such interactions conform to operational and investigative protocols.
