Friday, May 16, 2025 - An accident involving occupants of a light green Toyota Highlander and a Mack truck has claimed the lives of two members of the same family in Umuahia, Abia State.
The accident happened on Wednesday at Amibo Ubakala along
the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway of the city, when the Toyota Highlander,
which was at top speed, crashed under a truck loaded with iron scrap.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the Toyota Highlander
was coming from the Enugu end of the road with members of the same family.
The driver of the car was said to be at top speed when he
suddenly crashed under the packed long vehicle, resulting in his death and that
of his teenage daughter, while other occupants of the car suffered serious
injuries.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, who
arrived at the scene, pulled out the wrecked car from under the truck before
rushing the survivors to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, even as the dead
victims have been deposited in a mortuary.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, identified as Gideon
Effiong Udofia, is presently in police custody as investigations have
commenced.
Confirming the sad development on Thursday, the Sector
Commander of FRSC in Abia, Mrs Ngozi Ezeoma, said that personnel of her command
arrived at the scene to rescue the injured victims before taking them to
hospital.
She said that preliminary findings suspect the accident to
have been caused by over speeding or fatigue.
