Benue government unveils Nigeria’s first ever commercial solar taxi fleet



Tuesday, May 6, 2025 - The Benue State Government has unveiled a fleet of solar-powered electric vehicles, marking a bold step towards eco-friendly, affordable transportation and significant job creation across the state.

The initiative, a collaboration with Esse Mobility, introduced Nigeria’s first commercial solar taxi system, with operations commencing in Makurdi, the state capital.



According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, other cities such as Otukpo and Vandeikya are set to join the project in the coming months.

At the official launch, Esse Mobility’s founder, Mr Okey Esse, hailed the project as a milestone in Nigeria’s transition to clean energy. He revealed that each vehicle runs entirely on solar power, with batteries charged directly by sunlight, ideal for urban
