Saturday, May 3, 2025 - The Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party has ruled out any possibility of joining a coalition ahead of the 2027 general election, affirming its intention to focus on internal consolidation and strategic rebuilding.
This position was outlined in a communiqué released
following the party’s national executive council (NEC) meeting held on May 2 at
its national headquarters.
Signed by the faction’s national chairman, Julius Abure, and
national secretary, Farouk Ibrahim, the communiqué stated unequivocally that
the party “is not and will not be part of any coalition” in the lead-up to the
next general polls. Instead, the faction pledged to focus on strengthening its
internal structures, enhancing membership, and refining its political
strategies to improve its chances at the 2027 elections.
The NEC also reaffirmed the legitimacy of the party’s
national convention held on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, asserting that the
gathering complied with party guidelines and was properly communicated to the
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The council ratified the
ad-hoc delegates list that had earlier been endorsed at a previous NEC meeting
in Asaba on March 20.
Commending the Supreme Court for affirming the authority of
political parties in determining their internal affairs, the party said the
court's April 4 judgment validated the decisions made by its recognised organs.
The NEC reiterated its full backing for the Abure-led national working
committee, expressing confidence in its ability to guide the party to electoral
victory.
The council also congratulated George Moghalu on his
emergence as the party’s governorship candidate for the upcoming Anambra
election and urged voters to support his candidacy in the November 8 poll.
In a move aimed at party discipline, the NEC constituted a
five-member panel to investigate allegations of anti-party activities,
including those against Abia State Governor Alex Otti. The committee, chaired
by Ayo Olorunfemi with Umar Farouk Ibrahim as secretary, includes Kehinde Edun,
Dudu Manuga, and Callistus Ihejiagwa. The panel has been given two weeks to
submit its findings.
Governor Otti, speaking on Arise TV on Friday, May 2, dismissed Abure’s leadership, stating, “When you go through the Supreme Court judgment, you will know that Abure is just masturb@ting. He is out.”
