Friday, May 9, 2025 - A Kaduna court has ordered ten men to remain in jail while they face trial for repeatedly raping a 16-year-old disabled girl.
The attacks left the teenager pregnant, and she gave birth
to a baby boy four months ago.
The crimes happened in Likoro village, Kudan local area.
Police say an 11th suspect is still missing.
The girl’s brother reported the rapes last October when he
noticed her pregnancy. When asked, she told how different men tricked her into
going with them at various times.
Judge Abubakar Lamido said the men must stay in prison until
the case moves to a higher court. The next hearing is set for May 22, 2025.
Kaduna’s Commissioner for Human Services, Hajiya Rabi
Salisu, called the case “heartbreaking.” She said the girl was only 14 when the
rapes started and is now struggling to care for her baby. The victim’s parents
are blind, and she has vision problems too.
Salisu blamed a former police officer for improperly letting
some suspects go free earlier. She promised the government would help the young
mother and her child.
Kaduna state has strict laws against harming women and
children. Officials warned they will punish anyone who abuses disabled people.
Police are still searching for the one suspect who escaped.
The case has shocked many in Nigeria, where violence against
women and disabled people remains a serious problem. Activists say more needs
to be done to protect vulnerable groups.
