Monday, April 14, 2025 - A Methodist Bishop, Sunday Ndukwo Onuoha, says greater food insecurity awaits the nation if the issue of farmers/herders clashes experienced in various parts of the country continue to receive less attention.
He said that failure of the federal government to
holistically address the crises had further emboldened recalcitrant herders to
continue unleashing mayhem in various parts of the country.
Bishop Onuoha, who spoke on Sunday while reacting to some
sad events in Plateau, Benue, Enugu, Ondo and other states, expressed worry
that cassava tubers are allegedly uprooted and fed to cattle, thereby
increasing hunger in the land.
“If the Federal government is sincere about ensuring food
availability, issue of farmer/herder clashes, should not be treated with kid
gloves
“Failure to speak in tandem with commensurate punishment to
those hiding under the guise of herders has further led to the massacre of
farmers and destruction of farmlands”, Bishop Onuoha warned.
He noted that it has even become more pertinent to address
the clashes now that the farming season has long commenced, stressing that many
Nigerians are now afraid to go into farming business.
He further called on security agencies to brace up and
identify those people hiding under the guise of herders to perpetuate crime in
the country.
