Saturday, April 12, 2025 - The political rally organized by The NEW Associates, initially slated for Saturday, April 12 in Yenagoa, has been rescheduled to April 26, 2025. The announcement was made on Friday, April 11, by George Turnah, MON, convener of the event and leader of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the group, during a press briefing in Yenagoa.
The rally, which has drawn attention as a potential pro-Wike
mobilization effort, was expected to serve as a significant political statement
amid growing undercurrents in Bayelsa State. However, Turnah cited overlapping
engagements and respect for Ijaw leadership consultations as reasons for the
postponement.
“Several Pro-Diri and Pro-Tambuwal groups have announced
solidarity rallies for the same date and location we had initially planned for
our inauguration,” Turnah said. “As a peaceful and people-driven organization,
we have decided to shift our event to allow these groups space to express
themselves and to avoid any undue tension.”
The NEW Associates, describing itself as a grassroots
movement aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, has
been active in the South-South region. Political analysts view the group as
part of a wider realignment ahead of future elections.
Turnah reiterated the organization’s support for national
unity and development, stating, “We believe that President Tinubu’s success is
Nigeria’s success. Our movement is about development, peace, and
empowerment—not division.”
He expressed gratitude to stakeholders, patrons, and members
of the movement for their continued support and called for sustained momentum
as preparations continue for the rescheduled rally.
“We urge our members and the good people of Bayelsa to keep the momentum alive as we work towards a successful and peaceful rally on April 26,” he added.
