Tuesday, April 1, 2025 - A suspected burglar was beaten to death by an angry mob in the Adzata community, Kurudu ward, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).
A resident of Kurudu, Yahaya Labaran, said the incident
happened last Friday around 6:50 pm when the suspect, whose name was yet to be
identified, invaded the community in an attempt to burgle a house under
construction.
He said the suspect, who had broken into the building, was
caught while attempting to remove some of the building materials out of the
house.
He said the suspect, who attempted to escape, was
intercepted and some people launched a vicious attack on him
Labaran said the mob descended on him with sticks, stones,
and other objects, beating him to a stupor.
He said despite the pleas from some individuals for
restraint, the mob refused to back down but further descended on him heavily.
He added, “By the time police operatives from Kurudu
division arrived at the scene, the suspect was barely alive. The officers
rushed him to Karu General Hospital but it was too late as was confirmed dead
on arrival.”
The incident has reignited concerns over the increasing
cases of jungle justice in communities, where frustrated residents take the law
into their hands, instead of handling suspects to the authorities.
While some believe such practice deters crime, legal experts
warn that it could lead to wrongful deaths, lawlessness, and embolden vigilante
violence. It would be recalled that a similar incident happened on December 27,
2024, when two suspected one chance syndicates were set ablaze by a mob near
Dunamis Church in Lugbe along the Airport Road in Abuja.
The spokeswoman of the FCT police command, SP Adeh
Josephine, did respond to calls and text messages sent to her on the incident
as at the time of filling the report.
