Friday, March 14, 2025 - The Edo State Police Command has initiated full investigation into a fatal motor accident that led to the d3ath of a 2-year-old girl.
The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, 12th March, 2025 at about
1730hrs, at the Ring Road area of Benin-City.
It was gathered that the minor was crushed to d3ath by a commercial
driver following a clash with officers of the Edo State Public Safety Response
(PSR) Team at Ring Road.
Eyewitnesses reported that PSR operatives attempted to seize the
steering wheel of the moving vehicle, causing the driver to lose control.
The bus then veered off the road, ramming into a roadside POS kiosk,
where the toddler and her mother were standing. The child was k!lled
instantly.
An enraged crowd at the scene attacked the PSR officers before taking
them, along with the child’s lifeless body, to a nearby police station.
Spokesperson of the command, CSP Moses Joel Iyamu, who confirmed the
incident in a statement on Thursday said efforts are ongoing to identify and
arrest the driver who fled the scene.
“The tragic incident involves a white Vannette bus with reg. no BEN 406
YA ramming into some pedestrian, ostensibly to evade arrest by members of the
Edo State Public Safety Response. Regrettably, a girl of about 2yrs old lost
her life while the mother is currently receiving treatment at the hospital,”
the statement read.
"On receipt of the report of the accident, operatives of the Esigie
Divisional Headquarters led by the Divisional Traffic Officer swiftly got to
the scene to manage the situation, a member of the Public Safety Response
accused of causing the accident was rescued from a mob and taken into custody
for investigation. The lifeless body of the child was rushed to the hospital,
where she was confirmed dead.
"As part of the ongoing investigation, efforts are ongoing to
identify and arrest the driver who fled the scene. Other records have been
taken as well as pictorial evidence to aid in establishing the cause of the
accident.
"Meanwhile, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Betty Enekpen
Isokpan Otimenyin, psc, mnips, urges all motorists to observe all traffic
rules, obey constituted authorities and exercise patience while on the
road.
“Every road user has the responsibility to protect his/her life and that
of every other road user by obeying established road safety protocols.”
