Thursday, February 20, 2025 - At least, two people have been killed, and no fewer than ten others have been kidnapped by armed bandits in Wushishi and Rafi Local Government Areas of Niger State.
A security operative, who spoke on condition of anonymity told Daily
Trust that the victims included a local vigilante and a logger.
“Right now, the bandits are in Akare Forest. One of our vigilantes has
been kidnapped, and they took him along with two guns. We don’t know what they
plan to do with him yet. We’ve been battling them since yesterday. So far, one
vigilante and a logger have been killed,” he said.
As of 5 PM on Wednesday, locals reported that the armed men, moving in
large numbers, were still hiding in the Akare forest, with dozens of stolen
cattle.
Eyewitnesses say the assailants had been spotted in the Akare axis, with
security forces, including vigilantes, trailing them.
Another source revealed that the bandits were seen riding motorcycles in
groups of three at their usual crossing point in Kundu, Rafi LGA, heading
toward Mashegu LGA with rustled cattle.
Meanwhile, fresh attacks were reported in the Gunna District of Rafi LGA
on Wednesday morning, where the criminals raided several villages and set fire
to yam barns.
The Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Brigadier General
Bello Abdullahi Mohammed (Rtd), confirmed the attack, stating that security
forces had been deployed to the affected areas and were actively pursuing the
attackers.
