Saturday, February 22, 2025 - The Abia State Police Command has launched an investigation following the circulation of a video on Facebook showing police officers allegedly assaulting a civilian. The incident, which reportedly took place along Lagos Street in Umuahia on February 20, quickly gained traction on social media.
In a statement released on Friday, February 21, the command’s
spokesperson, DSP Maureen Chinaka, confirmed that the officers involved have
been identified and are currently being interrogated at the State Criminal
Investigation Department (SCID) in Umuahia.
“The Abia State Police Command is aware of a trending video on Facebook
depicting some police officers manhandling a civilian. The incident is alleged
to have occurred along Lagos Street, Umuahia on 20/02/2025,” the statement
read. “The officers involved have been identified and are currently under
interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The public
will be updated after necessary administrative actions are taken against the
erring officers.”
The state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, condemned the
actions of the officers, labelling the behaviour as a violation of professional
standards and a disregard for the dignity of the public. He reiterated his
commitment to ensuring that officers under his leadership uphold the rule of
law and treat the public with respect.
“He reiterates that under his leadership, the command is committed to
ensuring a professionally competent, rule of law-compliant, and people-friendly
police force in line with the vision of the Inspector General of Police,” the
statement concluded.
