Monday, January 20, 2025 - Pope Francis has faulted the plans of the U.S. incoming president, Donald Trump, for an immigration crackdown when he returns to the White House on Monday.
The pope, in an interview with the Italian program Che Tempo Che Fa on
Nove, aired on Sunday, was asked about Trump’s mass deportation plans once he
returns to office.
The Catholic Pontiff said he had not spoken to Trump since his first
term in office.
However, he said that if it is true that Trump wants to expel
undocumented migrants, then it would be a disgrace, as it makes poor
unfortunates pay the price for societal imbalance.
“If he wants to expel undocumented migrants, it will be a disgrace. This
won’t do. This is not how you solve things,” he added.
It was gathered that the relationship between Pope Francis and Trump is
considered tense.
Recall that before the presidential election in November, the pope was
critical of both Trump and his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris.
“They are both against life, both the one who gets rid of migrants and
the one who kills babies,” he said, referring to Harris’s support for a woman’s
right to choose an abortion.
Trump, on Monday, will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United
States in Washington.
According to U.S. reports, he is set to sign a range of executive orders from day one, with a special focus on anti-migration measures.
