Wednesday, January 1, 2025 - Umar Damagum, the acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has opined that only a political alliance involving the main opposition party can make President Bola Ahmed Tinubu lose the elections in 2027.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, responding to recent remarks
by Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, who dismissed the possibility of an alliance with
the PDP, Damagum stated that his party remains the strongest opposition party
in Nigeria.
He claimed that no political alliance aimed at unseating President Bola
Tinubu in 2027 could succeed without the PDP’s involvement.
Damagum argued that the party’s consistency and ability to win elections
without holding federal power prove its strength.
He added, “The PDP is the only party that has consistently won elections
without being in power.”
“For over two decades, the PDP has remained steadfast, maintaining its
identity and producing governors and lawmakers in every part of the country.
Even if four parties merge without the PDP, they cannot win an election. We’ve
seen this play out repeatedly. Where are those parties now? Even their
alliances with other parties have not delivered the desired results,” the PDP
Chairman said.
He said, “I admit that some of his claims about the challenges we
faced back then are valid. As the Deputy National Chairman (North) at the time,
my powers were limited, but we tried to resolve the issues. Unfortunately,
those efforts fell short. He himself acknowledged this in previous interviews.”
