Friday, January 17, 2025 - A fire broke out in a house in the Ja’en Sabere neighborhood of Gwale Local Government Area in Kano, northern Nigeria, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old girl and the destruction of parts of the house.
The house owner, Saminu Abba, confirmed the incident on Thursday,
January 16, 2025.
He explained that the fire started around 1:00 AM on Wednesday night,
and that the Kano State Fire Service, local vigilantes, and other community
members responded to the emergency.
“We were asleep when we heard a loud noise and the shouts of people in
the neighborhood. When we woke up, we saw that the fire had started in parts of
our house and was blocking the exit, with the fire raging uncontrollably,”
Saminu said.
He continued, “After the fire service, vigilantes, and other community
members intervened, they broke into the neighboring house and six people
managed to escape, but unfortunately, their 18-year-old daughter, who had
sickle cell disease, died in the fire.”
Saminu Abba also added that their clothing and many of their belongings
were completely burned, and he appealed to the authorities for assistance given
the dire situation they were facing.
Meanwhile the PRO of Kano State Fire Services, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, said
he wasn’t aware, as he was on an official trip, but promised to provide further
details later
