Tuesday, January 28, 2025 - The Kwara State Government has set up a committee to investigate the flooding of rice farmlands in Shonga, Edu Local Government Area.
The unusual flooding, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday,
left farmers devastated after discovering their submerged farmlands later that
morning.
A statement issued on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary to the
Governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, confirmed the development and outlined the
government’s response.
“The committee is to visit the affected areas on a fact-finding mission,
where it will deliver the government’s condolence message to the Emir of
Shonga, Dr. Haliru Ndanusa, and the victims,” the statement read.
According to the statement, the committee will be led by the Deputy
Chief of Staff to the Governor, Princess Bukola Babalola.
Other members include the Commissioners for Agriculture, Water
Resources, and Environment; the Special Adviser on Special Duties; the SSA
Security to the Governor, Alhaji Muhyideen Aliu; a representative of the Kwara
State Emergency Management Agency; a director in the Office of the Secretary to
the State Government (who will serve as Secretary); and a representative of the
Kwara State Social Investment Programme.
The government reiterated its commitment to investigating the incident thoroughly and supporting the affected farmers.
