Friday, January 31, 2025 - The Kano State Executive Council has approved the State Climate Change Policy, a strategic framework designed to address environmental challenges and position the state for a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf officially received the policy document from
the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad
Hashim, following the council’s weekly meeting.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dr. Hashim highlighted the policy’s
significance, noting that an action plan will be developed to guide its
implementation.
He commended Governor Yusuf’s visionary leadership in championing
climate action and sustainable development in the state.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change led the development of
the policy, which institutionalizes climate action across key sectors such as
agriculture, energy, health, urban development, waste management, transport,
water resources, and industry.
The policy provides a roadmap for planning, financing, and coordinating
Kano’s climate response while integrating it into the state’s broader
socioeconomic development strategy.
It is designed to support emissions reduction and adaptation to extreme
weather conditions, facilitate access to climate finance mechanisms, including
Green Bonds, align Kano’s climate efforts with national and global
environmental policies, fostering opportunities for partnerships and funding.
Dr. Hashim emphasized that the state envisions “a low-carbon and
climate-resilient Kano”, with a mission to “ensure sustainable development and
a climate-proofed economy through multi-stakeholder engagement.”
A key aspect of the policy is its commitment to gender-responsive
climate resilience and sustainable economic growth. The implementation strategy
will integrate climate concerns into existing state policies, encourage
innovation, and enhance governance structures to drive long-term impact.
The commissioner also acknowledged the contributions of international
organizations, including PERL, PACE, UNICEF, and KN-WECCMA, in shaping the
policy.
Dr. Hashim described the policy’s approval as a major milestone,
enabling Kano to strengthen climate governance, attract funding, and establish
itself as a leader in environmental sustainability.
With this initiative, Kano State is set to play a crucial role in Nigeria’s climate resilience agenda, creating new opportunities for investment, innovation, and sustainable development.
