Friday, January 31, 2025 - The Kano State government has earmarked N16.6 billion for the agricultural sector in the 2025 budget.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Musa Shanono,
disclosed this on Thursday while presenting the 2025 budget breakdown.
He emphasized that the allocation reflects the government’s commitment
to transforming agriculture into a key driver of economic growth.
“As part of our plan to improve irrigation and water supply for farming
activities, about N3 billion has been allocated for constructing the 3.1
billion litres Dansoshiya Dam and providing flowing channels,” Mr. Shanono
said.
He further revealed that the Kano State Agricultural and Rural
Development Authority (KNARDA) and the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development
Project (KSADP) would receive N5.6 billion.
According to him, the funds will be used to enhance agricultural
productivity and competitiveness, particularly in crop and livestock farming.
“To ensure farmers have access to quality inputs, N815 million has been
set aside for purchasing demonstration seeds, fertilizers, and agrochemicals,”
he added.
In addition, the government plans to invest N571 million in constructing
onion beds across the state’s three senatorial districts. It has also allocated
N391 million for initiatives supporting women in agriculture under the value
chain development programme.
Mr. Shanono further disclosed that N167 million would be used to procure
veterinary clinics and essential materials to improve animal health and
livestock farming.
The state has also budgeted N162 million to establish a pasture museum
at Kadawa to support the KSADP initiative.
“These investments demonstrate the state government’s commitment to
developing its agricultural sector, creating opportunities for farmers and
herders, and ensuring food security for its citizens,” he stated.
