Thursday, January 16, 2025 - A High Court sitting in Warri, Delta State on Wednesday, ordered that a 25-year-old man, Oghenevwede Friday, should be remanded to the Warri Correctional Center for allegedly r3ping a 14-year-old girl.
The magistrate case adjourned the case till the 4th of February
2025 pending legal advice from the office of the Director of Public
Prosecutions, DPP.
Human rights activist, Kelvin Ejumudo, who confirmed the
arraignment in a Facebook post said the suspect committed the offence on
January 5, 2025.
According to Mr Ejumudo, the victim was sent on an errand by her
visually impaired mother when the suspect dragged her onto a tricycle and r3ped
her.
“On the 5th January 2025 I got a distress call that a 14years old
daughter of a blind woman was raped in Iyara street, Warri South Local
Government Council Area of Delta state by one 25 years Old Oghenevwede Friday,
male,” he wrote.
"While in the hospital with my late sister, I responded to the case
upon seeing the helpless state of the daughter and her blind mother, with the
help of the youths he was apprehended and handed over to the Police officers at
B Division Warri.
"The blind mother sent her daughter to buy candle at 9pm and the
said Friday called her she refused and he followed her to a dark path of the
road and forcefully dragged her to a keke and r3ped her there.
"Thereafter he took her into his house and washed the blood stains
off her clothes and gave her his shirt to wear. She managed to escape from his
house when he asked her to fetch water from the well.
"The medical examination showed that her hymen had been broken and
her vulva ruptured.
"Mr Friday Oghenevwede was arraigned at the Warri High Court 3
today and was remanded to Warri correctional centre and the case adjourned till
4th of February 2025 awaiting DPP’s advice.
“Rape is a criminal act and His Excellency the executive Governor of
Delta state Rt Hon
Sheriff Oborevwori led administration frowns at it and has zero
tolerance for rapists.”
