A Friday, January 24, 2025 - t least 25 people were killed, dozens injured in a road accident in northern Ethiopia on Thursday, local authorities confirmed.
The accident occurred when a transport bus
lost control and overturned in the Dawunt District of the Amhara Region,
eventually leaving 25 people dead, the North Wello Zone communication office
said in a statement.
The accident left 14 people with serious
injuries and 15 others with minor injuries. Local officials said the injured
are currently receiving medical treatment at nearby health facilities.
Although the East African country has one of
the lowest per capita car ownership rates in the world, deadly traffic
accidents are relatively common. The blame is often put on bad roads, reckless
driving, lax enforcement of safety rules, and a flawed system for issuing
driving licenses.
