Sunday, January 12, 2025 - Fifty-nine children from Sumaila Local Government Area, initially suspected to have been trafficked, have been repatriated to Kano State following the intervention of Senator Kawu Sumaila.
The children were handed over to the Kano State Ministry of Women
Affairs, Children, and Disabled by the Federal Government.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Muttaka Iliyasu Yakasai
received the children on behalf of the Commissioner, Hajiya Amina Abdullahi
HOD.
Speaking at the handover event, the Chairman of Sumaila Local
Government, Faruk Abdu Sumaila, commended Senator Kawu Sumaila for facilitating
the safe return of the children. He revealed that the children had been sent to
Abuja in search of Islamic knowledge but emphasized the need to prioritize
their safety by keeping such educational pursuits within family care.
“This administration will no longer tolerate the practice of sending
young children far away for education. We are committed to safeguarding their
welfare and ensuring they remain within their families and communities,” said
Abdu, who also donated cash to support the children and their families.
The FCT police command had intercepted a 15-seater bus transporting 59 children suspected to have been trafficked on January 6, 2025 along the Abuja-Kano route.
