Friday, January 31, 2025 - Five persons were arraigned on Thursday before a Magistrate Court sitting in Ago-Iwoye, in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State, for allegedly assaulting a secondary school teacher, Mr. Akeem Soyingbe, of Mamu Community Comprehensive High School, Ago-Iwoye.
The defendants, appearing before Magistrate Mrs. O. F. Adeduntan,
pleaded not guilty to the six-count charge leveled against them.
They are
Sunday Matthew (19), Salisu Sulaiman (32), Ojenugba Philips (34), Sunday Abu
(45), and Joel Sunday (20)
The
prosecutor, Sgt. Abolarinwa Wasiu, informed the court that the defendants
committed the offence on January 29 at Mamu Community Comprehensive High
School, Ago-Iwoye.
He told the court that
the defendants conspired among themselves to assault the teacher on the grounds
that he deliberately failed an SS1 student, Sunday Matthew, causing him to
repeat the class.
"The defendants entered the school premises on motorcycles and
assaulted Mr. Akeem Soyingbe, a teacher, claiming he was responsible for
Matthew’s poor academic performance and failure,” he said.
“The act displayed by the defendants has created fear and anxiety among
students, resulting in poor school attendance today.”
Magistrate Adeduntan, however, granted the defendants bail in the sum of
N500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that the sureties must provide evidence of two years’ tax
payment to the Ogun State Government.
The case was thereafter adjourned until February 27 for hearing.
