Friday, December 13, 2024 -Chiamaka Nnadozie has been named among the final three nominees for the 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled the shortlist on
Thursday, December 12, placing Nnadozie in contention alongside Zambia’s
Barbara Banda and Morocco’s Sanna Mssoudy. Nnadozie, the only goalkeeper on the
list, is vying to become the first goalkeeper to win the award since its
inception in 2001.
This year’s award is set to crown a new winner, breaking Asisat
Oshoala’s dominance since 2018. The Super Falcons striker, who has won the
title six times, including the last three editions, is not in the running this
time.
Nnadozie, who also made the top three for the Goalkeeper of the Year
award, previously clinched that title in 2023. The 24-year-old showcased
stellar performances for both her club and country throughout 2024.
In the 2023/24 French women’s league, Nnadozie was named Goalkeeper of
the Season after leading Paris FC to a third-place finish. She also represented
Nigeria at the 2024 Paris Olympics, standing out despite the Super Falcons’
group-stage exit after losing all three matches.
The winners will be announced on December 16 during the 2024 CAF Awards
ceremony at the Palais des Congrès in Marrakech, Morocco.
Meanwhile, in the men’s category, Stanley Nwabali did not make the final
shortlist for Goalkeeper of the Year. The Super Eagles shot-stopper was
replaced by Andre Onana, Ronwen Williams, and Yahia Fofana in the top three
nominees.
