Sunday, December 22, 2024 - Zambian authorities have arrested two men accused of attempting to use witchcraft against President Hakainde Hichilema. The suspects, identified as Jasten Mabulesse Candunde and Leonard Phiri, were detained in Lusaka in possession of various charms, including a live chameleon.
Police allege the men were hired by Nelson Banda, the younger brother of
independent MP Emmanuel “Jay Jay” Banda, to carry out the purported plot.
Nelson, who is currently on the run, reportedly promised the suspects over 2
million Zambian kwacha (£58,000; $73,000) for their actions.
Emmanuel Bada, once affiliated with the Patriotic Front (PF)
party, has faced numerous legal issues, including charges of robbery in
Zimbabwe and accusations of escaping custody. The PF has frequently claimed
that such charges against its associates are politically motivated.
The suspects are being charged under Zambia’s Witchcraft Act for
offenses including “possession of charms,” “professing knowledge of
witchcraft,” and “cruelty to wild animals.” Police confirmed they were found
with various charms and the live chameleon, often linked to traditional
practices.
The pair remains in custody and is expected to appear in court, though
an exact date has not yet been announced.
