Saturday, November 9, 2024 -More than 30 miners
affected by the collapse of a mining pit around Adamawa/Taraba border community
were buried alive with none of their remains recovered, an official of the
Toungo Local Government of Adamawa State has said.
Initial reports put the death toll at about 22 following the accident
which occurred at an illegal mining site within a national game reserve
stretching across Gashaka Local Government Area in Taraba State and the Toungo
Local Government Area.
The information Officer of the Toungo Local Government, Umar Adamu, who
gave an update on the incident to our correspondent yesterday, said the mining
site collapse occurred on October 6, 2024.
Contrary to the 22 deaths widely reported on Thursday, the information
officer said the dead were more than 30.
“None of the dead was retrieved. They were all covered up inside the
deep pit. It was believed that more than 30 people were thus actually buried
alive,” he said in a telephone interview.
According to him, most of the miners were from Zamfara and Sokoto
states, and because they were believed to be all Muslims, they were treated as
such.
“As none of the dead could be retrieved for proper burial, Muslims
gathered at the site of the collapsed mine and offered prayers,” the Toungo
information officer said.
