Saturday, June 8, 2024 -A former Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, has urged Nigerians not to be quick to judge President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Okupe said this while speaking on Channels
Television’s Politics Today on Friday.
Recall that Okupe, on January 8, dumped the
Labour Party citing ideological differences after the 2023 election as the
basis for his departure from the party.
Okupe also was in December 2023 convicted by
the Federal High Court in Abuja after being prosecuted by the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission for money laundering to the tune of N700m.
He said, “You can never and should never
judge this administration like you judged other administrations. Because this
is an abnormal situation in which this administration came to life.
“After such a prostrate economy for eight
years, the government and governance were abandoned. Things became so bad. That
was the point at which this administration came in. People are forgetting.
He also said that out of all the candidates
that contested the 2023 presidential election President Tinubu was the best in
terms of capability, and commitment.
“Let me tell you, of all the people that
ran for president in 2023, by the benefit of hindsight, Bola Tinubu is the
best.
“I have seen Peter Obi, I have been with
Atiku Abubakar, I also knew Bola Tinubu many years ago.
“I have not seen him in the last 7 to 8
years, but he is the best in terms of capability, commitment, and knowledge.
People keep underestimating what he did in Lagos.”
Okupe also stated that he agreed with
the position of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation who said the
shutdown of the national grid was a treasonable offence.
He said, “You know, what he said was
correct. You can’t go and switch off the national grid of a nation. It’s
unacceptable. But you know, I don’t also blame labour, the situation should not
have arisen.
“We have a whole government in place, where
is the security, where is intelligence? You know, people are also taking
politics too far. You have a point to make, but you don’t have to grind the
government to a halt. You know, Labour of course by going to shut up the
national grid. That is evil, it is, it is sinful it is unacceptable and it’s
criminal.”
